Botswana

For unspoilt African wilderness Botswana is an excellent choice; with the contrasting semi-arid sandscape of the Kalahari and the spectacular waterways of the Okavango Delta, which form an intricate network of channels, eventually seeping away into the sand. This variety of habitat is the reason that Botswana is home to such a huge diversity of wildlife.

The Okavango Delta is a romantic paradise for an African wildlife safari.  You may explore the large sand islands on a game drive, experience the excitement and discover the smaller details on a walking safari, glide peacefully along the waterways in a ‘mokoro’, a traditional dug-out canoe, or simply sit and relax at a luxury safari lodge waiting to see what comes down to the water to drink.  Chobe National Park offers great wildlife viewing and is renowned for its large elephant populations.  We recommend a boat cruise along the Chobe River, which draws many of the animals down to its waters, especially during the drier months.

The flooding of the Okavango Delta each year transforms the arid plains of the Kalahari into a vast expanse of wetland, teeming with life. One of the greatest spectacles on Earth makes this reason enough to visit, but the floods also create ideal conditions to view more unusual water adapted species during your safari, such as red lechwe or if you are lucky the shy sitatunga antelope, large numbers of hippos and incredible birdlife. Naturally these species have their attendant predators patrolling the sand islands in search of their prey. Altogether this creates a very special and dramatic safari holiday destination.

There aren’t many other places in the world that can offer such a scenic holiday as Botswana. The myriad of waterways of the Okavango contrast with the undulating dunes of the Kalahari Desert; each with its own array of animals and plants adapted for survival in these very different conditions. It’s the ideal place for a safari holiday for the first timer or the connoisseur alike. Another highlight is the Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans National Park, a huge salt-pan complex where the adventurous may drive into the endless mirages, or search for the migrating herds of wildebeest and zebra.

A holiday in Botswana has something to suit everyone; whether you’re an exotic holiday-lover, looking to spend a luxurious, relaxing and indulgent time in the heart of Africa, or an adventurer lured by the wilderness and mystery of a safari here. No matter what your reason for visiting, you’ll find Botswana to be a region that is relatively unexplored and untouched by tourists, thus maintaining its natural habitats and charm.
