Naturally Africa Foundation introduces computers to primary school

The first phase of this programme was the introduction of laptops to Monkey Bay Full Primary School and the teachers have been given a 3 month basic course in Word, Excel, email and internet, equipping them with essential computer skills and knowledge of information technology.

This is an exciting new development for the school, as it was the first primary school within the district of Mangochi in Malawi to have such a programme introduced.  The aim is that once the teachers have achieved a basic level of competency they will begin teaching basic IT skills to the upper year groups at the school, assisted by volunteers.

Computer classes offer a valuable means to teach other important topics, such as environmental conservation, or health education whilst developing the learners IT skills.  These basic skills will also provide the pupils with a headstart when they reach secondary education and equip them with skills that are useful in business and hence improving their employment prospects.

Class sizes in Malawi are often as high as 100-150 students, so the next phase is to establish a computer laboratory at the school, so that classes may be split into manageable groups and enable each student to work at their own computer station.  A suitable and secure building is available at the school, so the next challenge is to source another 25 desktop PCs, or laptops to furnish the computer lab.

If you have an old laptop, or computer that you no longer use, or would like to donate, please do contact us, as your support will be much appreciated.
