Mozambique

Mozambique has relatively recently opened up to tourists and is quickly becoming a favourite for many visitors to Africa. With 2500 km of coastline, idyllic white sand islands, turquoise waters, exceptional scuba diving and snorkelling, wild National Parks and a vast expanse of untrammelled Africa as you head further north it is clear why.

Tofo is a lively little coastal town in the south of Mozambique.  One of the few places where you may snorkel with the immense, but placid whale sharks year round and an excellent location to scuba dive with Manta Rays.  Head a little further north along the coast and you reach the Bazaruto Archipelago.  Explore the tropical waters around these islands on traditional dhow sailing boats, drift along walls of coral marvelling at the diversity of colourful fish, or explore some of the excellent scuba diving sites.

In the far northwest of the country, away from the better known coastal destinations is another beach haven on the shores of the freshwater Lake Niassa.  Lake Niassa (the Mozambican side of Lake Malawi) also offers incredible snorkelling in sparkling, clear waters.  Conservation efforts in this part of the country are also seeing the return of a lot of the wildlife species that were abundant here in the past.

The northern regions of Mozambique hide many of the country’s best kept secrets. The remote wilderness and spectacular coastline remains relatively untouched by tourism. This is one part of Africa that is often the topic of “Have you been to...?” conversations, but is still rarely visited.
