Kaokoland & The Skeleton Coast

One of Africa’s last true wildernesses and home to the Himba people; their skins painted red with ochre butter and still living their traditional nomadic pastoralist lifestyles. If you enjoy getting off the beaten track and exploring vast rugged mountain and desert wildernesses you will love this region and its dramatic scenery.

Despite the dry and forbidding environment Kaokoland and the Skeleton Coast are still inhabited by animals that have adapted to the desert conditions, including elephant, black rhino, lion and antelope, such as springbok and gemsbok.  It is possible to organise guided trips to try to find many of these animals. Epupa falls in the far north, on the border with Angola, are also well worth a visit.

You may include Kaokoland in your self-drive itinerary, but be sure to keep to the main routes, as even these do not see frequent vehicles, or you can join a private guided, or small group, expedition to discover some of the more remote areas.  Accommodation ranges from the good standard and attractively located commuity owned and run campsites to upmarket lodges where you will be exceptionally well looked after.
