Okavango Delta

Explore the waterways, islands and wildlife on an Okavango safari

The Okavango Delta is a spectacular and magical haven for wildlife. The seasonal Okavango flood featured as one of David Attenborough’s “Nature’s Great Events”. Each year the clear waters of the Okavango flood across the Kalahari Desert and produce Africa’s largest wetland and the world's largest inland delta.

The seasonal flooding by the Okavango waters draining from the Angolan highlands attracts one of Africa’s greatest concentrations of wildlife. The flood starts in March, peaking between June and August, which are Botswana’s dry months. The delta fans out into a shifting web of meandering channels, lagoons and islands before the clear waters gently soak away into the dry Kalahari Desert.

Game viewing is exceptional; boat and mokoro safaris adding a new dimension to the experience. Wildlife abounds – from herds of elephants and buffalo, to pods of hippos and prides of lions. Over 450 species of birds have been recorded.
