Climate Botswana has a variable temperate climate rather than a tropical one. During the winter (late May to August) the days are characteristically clear dry and sunny, but night time temperatures can be very cold. Temperatures below freezing are not uncommon in the Kalahari at this time of year. In contrast summer temperatures may be in excess of 40°C in some areas. The summer rainy season extends from November to March with the highest rainfall being in January and February. The average rainfall is about 450mm, but varies from 650mm in the far north of the country to less than 250mm in the Kalahari in the south-west. Before the rains in September and October, although it may be quite pleasant and dry, it is the most hot and humid time of year. Passports and Visas All visitors to Botswana must hold a passport that is valid for at least six months after the date of arrival. Entry visas may be obtained by visitors from most countries at international airports and borders. Visas are valid from 30 up to a maximum of 90 days. Time Differences Botswana operates at Greenwich Mean Time plus two hours throughout the year, making it an hour ahead of Central European Winter Time. Money The unit of currency is the Pula (P), with 100 Thebe (t) making up 1 Pula. Most major international credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Diners Club are accepted. Cash can be obtained using a credit card at Barclays Bank, First National Bank, or Standard Chartered Bank in major cities. Tax Value-added-tax (VAT) of 10% is charged on most items. Electricity Botswana’s electricity supply is 220 volts AC 50 Hz. Malaria Please seek professional medical advice as to which course of anti-malarial medication, if any, should be taken before you travel. You will usually need to start the course a week or two before entering a malaria-endemic area and for four weeks after leaving the malaria risk area. Vaccinations Although Botswana does not require that you have any inoculations to enter the country there are a number of vaccinations that it is sensible to consider for travel to all destinations in southern Africa. Please consult a medical professional at least 6 weeks prior to departure. |
